UK FAN GATHERING

The Rainbow Princess Network's UK fan gathering took place on Saturday afternoon (July 20) and it was a complete success. All together, just over 40 fans gathered under the mild English sun in London's Hyde Park. In a relaxed atmosphere fans chatted amongst themselves against the highly appropriate and complimentary soundtrack provided by Bobby and Charlotte, which included a whole array of classic Mariah tunes and remixes. To them we are all very grateful.
It was the perfect setting for fans to meet new faces and make friends with other fans and swap stories of falling in love with Mariah's music, comparing CD and vinyl collections and sharing photos. Soon the auction was underway and a very impressive ammount of Mariah merchandise was bought by many fans. They included promotional Last Night A DJ Saved My Life and Loverboy vinyls, 3 inch CDs from Japan, an assortment of UK Mariah CD singles and promotional postcards. Two lucky fans even walked away with a Glitter thong and vest top and a VHS copy of Glitter. We offer many thanks to Ash and the whole French team at mariahfanclub.com for providing such a lucrative auction. In total, £105 was raised to be donated to Camp Mariah.
Ash, administrator of the RPN, took this opportunity to reveal some very exciting news for UK fans: Britain is to join the list of European countries in which Wise Girls will be released!. This exclusive news was met by cheers and applause from the UK fans present. The UK distributors of Mariah's second movie have said "currently we have plans to release the movie wise girls in the cinema, at the moment we have a rough date of september".
Details of the Mariah Rose Project were also revealed and the finalised name of the rose was announced: it shall be called the Mariah Carey Sweet Fantasy Rose. After the auction everyone continued to chat and snack again and we even caught a rendition of Endless Love by three UK lambs and one from France on camera to send to Mariah with snippets from the other RPN gatherings that have been taking place across the world this Summer.
After about five hours the large group split into smaller groups and most headed for home or the nearest fast food restaurant. It was a fun day and great to see so many people turn up. I certainly hope you felt welcome and would love to see some of the friendly faces at future fan gatherings in London. Our special thanks go out to the team from mariahfanclub.com who travelled from France to join us and to everyone else who made the effort to travel longer distances, some up to 200 miles.

MARIAH SINGS UNDER THE MOONLIGHT

Exhibition outside program for Mariah Carey, guest at the marriage of Simona Massa and Massimiliano Iaione. The grooms (she a young Caprese lawyer, he a brilliant Roman jurist) came down to Canzone del Mare at Marina Piccola, with the Faraglioni enlightened from a beam of light of the true Caprese moon and a hundred of lights from sailing boats and yatchs that waved docked in the harbor.
Towards midnight, from the edges of the pool of the Canzone raised, similar to the singing of a nightingale, the extraordinary voice of Mariah Carey, who gave a remarkable performance of My All dedicated to Simona, the young Caprese who three years ago became an inseparable friend of the reserved Mariah.
The outside program performance was greeted with a chorus of applauses, both from the occupants of the boats in the harbor and from the guests among which there was the director of Panorama Carlo Rossella, Diego and Barbara Della Valle, old friend of the family. Immediately after Mariah's song, the sky was illuminated with a thousand fireworks.

MARIAH CAREY ON EX-HUSBAND MOTTOLA'S SIDE IN MICHAEL JACKSON BATTLE?

Mariah Carey is defending ex-husband Tommy Mottola against accusations hurled by Michael Jackson, according to MSNBC. Mottola's current wife, Thalia Motolla, claims that Carey called the Sony music chief and told him that she's on his side, not on Jackson's, and also said that Motolla's "anything but a racist", the network reported. Jackson has called Mottola a racist and "a devil" for allegedly under-promoting his current album Invincible. He also said Carey cried in his arms over Mottola's treatment of her.
Carey's spokeswoman, Cindi Berger, refutes the claim. "To the best of my knowledge, Mariah has not spoken to Mr. Mottola in several months," she said. However, Berger did make Carey's position quite clear. "From what I've heard she has told friends of hers that she is indeed standing behind him and supports him fully," she said in a statement issued on Carey's behalf.
"Mariah doesn't really know how to react to Michael Jackson's accusations. She was shocked, of course, as we all are," she told Music Insider. "Throughout all the years she has known Tommy, she has never known him to be a racist. Mariah does not feel that he is such a person after all the support he had given her. Michael did not have Mariah's permission or consent to use her in his battle with Sony and did not want any part of it. Mariah feels Michael is wrong and she is rather surprised that he has dragged her into this. She is very upset with him and is not behind him in this at all. Mariah has never directly accused Tommy of trying to ruin her career," Berger added. "She does not hate Tommy. She hated the way he had treated her while she was signed with Sony. Mariah does not hold grudges and has decided to leave her dispute with Tommy in the past and move forward."
Carey has been working on her album debut for Island/Def Jam with producers including Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and DJ Quik. It is expected to be released in the fall.

JACKSON'S CHARITY SINGLE "BLOCKED"

Michael Jackson's representatives and record company are blocking the release of the singer's all-star 11 September charity single, according to the company that owns the rights. Jackson enlisted Ricky Martin, Mariah Carey and 'N Sync to record "What More Can I Give?" in the weeks after the attacks on New York and Washington. But the project stalled after it was revealed that the single's executive producer, F Marc Schaffel, has a past directing gay pornographic movies.
The Japanese company that now owns the rights to the song says Sony Music and Jackson's lawyer are trying to stop the project seeing the light of day. The company, Music Fighters, bought the rights in the hope that it could release it around the first anniversary of the attacks, when it would also enlist Jackson for a charity mini-tour of Japan. But Sony and Jackson's lawyer, Zia Modabber, seemed to be trying to block the release by refusing clearance for some of the artists involved, Yasumi Takeuchi, president of Music Fighters, said.
"We are now totally perplexed and do not understand their motives at all," Mr Takeuchi said. He added that Sony Music told Music Fighters that they would not be releasing the single because of an ongoing dispute with Jackson. Sony and Ms Modabber should apologise to the artists who donated their time for a charity project, Mr Takeuchi said. Jackson, who appeared in a 11 September benefit concert in October, has himself attacked Sony for refusing to release the track.
But others believe Jackson's advisors urged Sony to drop the single without the singer's knowledge to avoid embarrassment about his connections with Schaffel. It is the latest twist in a bitter battle between the star and his record company, which has seen Jackson accuse Sony chairman Tommy Mottola of being "racist" and "very, very, very devilish". Another Jackson lawyer recently said the star was considering suing the record company for under-reporting sales of his latest album, Invincible, and other "Enron-like" accounting claims. Invincible has sold two million copies in the United States - compared with 26 million copies of his 1982 classic Thriller.

JACKSON CHARITY SINGLE BOGGED DOWN

Work continues in the struggle to release Michael Jackson's all-star charity single aimed at aiding victims of Sept. 11, reports Reuters. The song, "What More Can I Give", recorded shortly after the attacks on America, features the voices of Jackson, Ricky Martin, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and others, yet has not been released by Sony Music Entertainment, ostensibly due to a series of events that have only come to light recently. Last week, the Los Angeles Times revealed that McDonald's, which was to have made the song available at its burger outlets, backed out of the project once its customers complained about Jackson's personal reputation.
Then, the Times reported, Jackson severed ties with the executive producer of the song, F. Marc Shaffel, described as a former friend of the singer. Shaffel, it was also reported, acknowledges that in the past he has produced and directed gay adult videos. In a written statement received by Reuters on Saturday, Yasumi Takeuchi, president of Tokyo-based Music Fighters, said that his company had bought the rights to "What More Can I Give" in the hope of releasing it to coincide with a proposed Jackson tour of Japan. But that tour appears to be in doubt. Furthermore, Sony Music Entertainment Inc. and Jackson's lawyer, Zia Modabber, appear to be blocking the release of the single, says Reuters, citing the fact that both parties are attempting to block Music Fighters from gaining clearance from some of the artists involved.

SYDNEY FAN GATHERING REPORT

On July 20th 2002, like fans in London, Miami, Budapest, Brazil and New Jersey, the Australian Mariah Carey Fan Club celebrated everything that is "Mariah" by gathering in Sydney. Approximately 25 people were able to make it to the very relaxed day where many new friendships were made. For the majority the highlight was the Mariah auction where we raised AU$250 for the Fresh Air Fund. Auctioned items included Mariah vinyls, CDs, magazines and more.
Donations were also taken for the RPN "Mariah" rose project. Fans were keen to support the project with a further AU$250 raised. The event was filmed and will be compiled onto a tape with the other filmed gatherings and presented to Mariah. The day was a great success, and we look forward to future gatherings where even more fans can attend. Because hey, if Vicki came come all the way from England - then I am sure a lot more natives could make it.
Next time we plan to have the day more organised so we can fit in as much as possible. Thank you to everyone who attended, and a big shout out to both Jess and Ricardo who did a lot to help out.

WHITNEY AND MARIAH FIGHTING BACK

The world's two greatest singers are both set to release huge comeback albums this year - and both after a year of tumultuous personal problems. Mariah Carey will release her first album on new label, Universal Music after a year of disappointing sales, box office failure and a well-publicised breakdown. Whitney Houston too has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Marijuana possession charges, marriage woes, and reports of anorexia and bulimia. However by the end of the year they are both set to be back on top of the charts.
Whitney's new single is titled "Whatcha Lookin' At" and is directed towards the media. She explains, "This song has attitude. It's just my way of telling some people to mind their business and leave some of us alone. You know, people like Mariah Carey and I have had to accept some harsh remarks that are untrue and, uh, you know, they hurt. Lord knows this is my year. I'm telling you something here. I'm back on top and I'm making the rules this time. I ain't gonna be pushed around anymore. Mariah and I invented this and we're both not condescending to those counterfeits. Haha! You know who I'm talking about."
Mariah's new single is not expected for a few months, however rumours about the highly anticipated album suggest collaborations with everyone from Ashanti to Daniel Beddingfield.

MARIAH BATTLES NEW HEARTACHE

Mariah Carey is devasted by the death of her father and is tearfully telling pals that she has lost "the only man I know I can really trust". Retired aeronautical engineer Alfred Roy Carey died at age 72 from cancer July 4 at his suburban home in Huntington Station, N.Y. "Goodbye, daddy, I love you," Mariah wept before collapsing into the arms of the caregiver who nursed her dad through the final stages of the deadly disease, which sources say, had spread from his prostate to his brain. A family friend reveals, "Alfred promised Mariah that he would be her guardian angel, always looking over her and making sure no harm ever came to her. His words made Mariah cry like a baby."
While the songbird's father had divorced her mother Patricia in 1972 and saw little of her during her childhood, dad and daughter had grown very close in the 10 years since their reconciliation. In fact, Alfred was living just blocks away from the house the family once called home. When he was hospitalized three weeks before he died, Mariah, 32, rushed to his side from the Italian island of Capri, where she was recording her first album for her new label, Universal Music.
The singer, who raked in $58 million last year, told pals that of all the relatives to suddenly "resurface" after she became rich and famous, only her father had asked her for nothing. While Alfred saw his daughter infrequently, he attended her 1993 wedding to music mogul Tommy Mottola, whom she divorced five years later, and sat in the front row at her New York concerts. They also talked often on the phone an exchanged E-mail.
And Mariah's Venezuelan-born dad was there for her last July during her mental meltdown, which followed her bitter breakup with Latin heartthrob singer Luis Miguel. "He told her she was surrounded by 'yes people', who said what they thought she wanted to hear, not what was beast for her," says a second pal. And the first friend adds, "Because of all his good advice, Mariah is convinced her father will be her guardian angel. Though she's dealing with a lot of heartache right now, she knows she's not alone - a special man is looking out for her from above."

JAPAN COMPANY HITS SONY, JACKSON OVER SINGLE

The Japanese owner of the rights to an all-star charity single aimed at raising millions for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks says Michael Jackson and Sony Music Entertainment seemed to be blocking its release. The single is said to have brought together Ricky Martin, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and other stars to raise money for victims' families and survivors of the attacks on New York and Washington. But the single fell into limbo several months ago after Jackson cut ties with its executive producer after being told the producer was involved in pornography, Jackson's publicist said last week.
Producer F. Marc Shaffel has acknowledged producing and directing gay pornography videos. In a written statement received by Reuters Saturday, Yasumi Takeuchi, president of Tokyo-based Music Fighters, said his company had bought the rights to the all-star single "What More Can I Give", in the hope of releasing it to coincide with a proposed Jackson tour of Japan. That tour appears to be in doubt. But Sony Music Entertainment Inc and Jackson's lawyer, Zia Modabber, seemed to be trying to block the release of the single by preventing Music Fighters from gaining clearance from some of the artists involved, he said.
"We are now totally perplexed and do not understand their motives at all," Takeuchi said, adding that he felt Sony Music and Modabber should apologize to the artists who donated their time for victims of the attack. Sony Music told Music Fighters that they would not be releasing the single themselves because of their ongoing dispute with Jackson, Takeuchi said. Jackson and Sony Music are locked in a feud over his accusations of racism at the company, and the poor performance of his latest album, "Invincible". The album, which reportedly cost about $30 million to make, has sold only 2 million copies in the United States. By contrast, "Thriller", Jackson's blockbuster album of the 1980s, sold nearly 50 million copies worldwide.
Jackson is now considering suing Sony Music for breach of contract, accusing it of questionable accounting practices, his lawyer said on Thursday. Jackson's representatives said last October he had finished studio recordings for the single, which he hoped would raise $50 million for victims' families and survivors of the attacks by suspected Islamic militants that killed nearly 3,000 people.

BERGER TAKES THE STAND

Mariah Carey's spokeswoman, Cindi Berger spoke with Music Insider and E-Music News regarding the different rumors that have been circulating about the singer. To set the record straight once and for all, Berger speaks out about the various reported media and press "gossip" about Carey. According to Berger, Carey has not dated anyone since her breakup with Latin heartthrob, Luis Miguel. Berger states, "Mariah is not dating anyone at this time. All she wants to do right now is focus on herself and her career. She has never dated rapper Eminem, P.Diddy, or Tyrese. Those rumors are completely false. She hasn't been dating since her breakup with Luis Miguel", she tells Music Insider reporter Dennis O'Leary.
Regarding Jackson's attack on Carey's ex-husband, Tommy Mottola, Carey is appalled by Jacko's actions and didn't want to be hauled in the battle between the King Of Pop and her former label. Her rep releases this statement on the singer's behalf. "Mariah doesn't really know how to react to Michael Jackson's accusations. She was shocked of course as we all are. Throughout all the years she has known Tommy, she has never known him to be a racist. Mariah does not feel that he is such a person after all the support he had given her. Michael did not have Mariah's permission or consent to use her in his battle with Sony and did not want any part of it. He dragged her in this mess on his own."
Rumors are flying that the R&B Diva has sided with her ex during the dispute and believes there is no truth to Jackson's accusations. "Mariah feels Michael is wrong and she is rather surprised that he has dragged her into this. She is very upset with him and is not behind him in this at all", says Berger. To set the record straight she continues, "To my knowledge, Mariah has not contacted Tommy personally. From what I've heard she has told friends of hers that she is indeed standing behind him and supports him fully."
The CEO who was rumored to have tried sabotaging Carey's career was found innocent after legal actions and private hearings took place to prove he did no such thing. With a superior position as president and CEO of any record company, a serious accusation of that sort must be proven for the sake and security of an artist(s) under that particular label. Such improper behavior is not tolerated in the business and if Mottola was indeed found guilty, proper actions would've taken place for his removal. "If Tommy Mottola had sabotaged Mariah Carey's career, he would have been fired and not permitted to work in the industry", says Music Executive, Darryl Harvey. "He is not stupid enough to put his own career on the line by trying to ruin Mariah's", he states.
Carey's spokesperson, Cindi Berger told E-Music, "Mariah has never directly accused Tommy of trying to ruin her career. Circumstances led her to believe that her former label may have been involved, alongside EMI with their lack of promotion and efforts led to the misfortunate failure of Glitter. Mariah has accepted the fact that it did not succeed as she hoped and has to move on. She does not hate Tommy. She hated the way he had treated her while she was signed with Sony. Mariah does not hold grudges and has decided to leave her dispute with Tommy in the past and move forward."
On another note, Hip Hop princess Ashanti is rumored to be collaborating with Carey on her forth-coming album not yet titled. It has been reported that she is to be writing a song for the pop diva. "There's a possibility they may work together from what I have heard, but nothing has been confirmed just yet", says Berger. "Mariah is very busy working on her album in Capri and may not need a use for Ashanti."
Carey's father, Alfred Roy Carey, 72, has recently lost his battle with cancer. He passed away on July 4th. Although she and her father had been estranged for quite awhile, her spokesperson states that they have grown close over the past few years and she has been by his side for the past few weeks. Carey has been spotted at several locations since her father's passing, with reports claiming that his death has no impact on the singer from her facial expressions. But Berger tells E-News, "Mariah has been deeply affected by her father's passing, but at the same time she has an album to finish up and other things to do. She got to spend a lot of time with him so it's not difficult for her to let the pain go, or at least push it aside and focus on other things."
Carey was last spotted out on a dinner break in Capri while working efficiently on her new album expected to be released this fall.

MARIAH THANKS FANS

On Mariah's official website, MariahCarey.com, is a thank-you note for all the fans who expressed their sympathy with the loss of Mariah's father: "Mariah would like to thank all of you for your condolensces regarding the loss of her father. Your warm thoughts were appreciated and meant so much." Alfred Carey died on July 4, aged 72. He suffered from cancer for the last couple of years. He died while Mariah hold his hand. "She's grateful that she had a chance to spend these weeks with him," her rep told us.
Alfred and his wife, Patricia divorced in 1973, when Mariah was 3. Though they were once estranged, in recent years they grew close again. Mariah's mother is Irish and her father was black and Venezuelan, but she doesn't feel an affinity with one cultural group more than others. "I identify with all things that I am, and I feel like that should be OK. But I look at myself as a human being," Mariah said.

WHERE DOES MARIAH CAREY STAND ON ALL THIS?

Well, this settles everything, then: One question we're sure many of you have been asking yourselves during this whole dust-up between Michael Jackson and Sony music chief Tommy Mottola is: Where does Mariah Carey stand on all this? Carey was once married to Mottola, but claims he sabotaged her career after their bitter divorce (Sony recently paid Carey $50 million to walk away from her contract with the label). And Jackson has claimed Carey "cried in my arms" because of the way Mottola allegedly treated her. And, like Jackson, Carey's been accused of being just a tad self-absorbed and eccentric.
So she's got to be in Jacko's camp, right? Not according to MSNBC. Thalia, Mottola's current wife, reportedly told MSNBC gossip scribe Jeannette Walls that Carey phoned her ex-hubby to offer her support in his dispute with Jackson. "She said she's on his side, not on Michael's," Walls quoted Thalia Mottola as saying. "Mariah said Michael's wrong in this whole thing, that Tommy's anything but a racist. She wants to leave her dispute with Tommy in the past and she's rather appalled that Michael has dragged her into this thing."
But Carey's spokeswoman would not confirm the alleged phone call. "To the best of my knowledge, Mariah has not spoken to Mr. Mottola in several months," said the spokeswoman. Mottola's office had no comment.

DANIEL BEDINGFIELD TEAMS UP WITH MARIAH

Daniel Bedingfield is aiming to get Mariah Carey's career back on track. In one of the most unusual musical collaborations ever, he's agreed to write with troubled Mariah. The unlikely duo were teamed up by their US record company, Island Def Jam. Critics will see it as a desperate attempt by Carey to refashion her career, working with one of the world's most in-demand DJs. But Daniel said: "I see myself very much as a writer."
The New Zealand-born star, who has also contributed a track for former Steps duo H and Claire's debut album, continued: "Barry White, Sting and Ms Dynamite are on my list of people I would like to write with." But it is the tieup with Mariah that will raise the most eyebrows. Daniel, 21, has become one of the dance world's biggest stars since the release last winter of his infectious tune "Gotta Get Thru This". The track, made in his bedroom in Lewisham, south London, cost just GBP 1,000. His new single, "James Dean", out on August 5, is also set to be a hit.
Daniel's low-key rise to the top couldn't be in bigger contrast to Mariah, 32. Her albums and videos over the years have cost millions to produce. But that all changed last year. First there were the problems in Mariah's personal life - her split from longterm love Luis Miguel and alleged suicide attempt. Then came Glitter, the film and album which bombed. As a result, her deal with EMI ended. Two months ago, Mariah signed a new contract with Island Def Jam. They obviously see her future in singing dance tunes. And believe Dan's the man to put her back on top.
